How To Select The Perfect Showerhead
Showering is usually a private matter, but not for me. As someone immersed in the plumbing and construction industry, I'm comfortable discussing any aspect of it!
A question that comes my way frequently is how to improve a shower head. Unfortunately, there isn't a straightforward answer to that, but it's worth noting that shower heads have evolved significantly in the past 5 years. To help you find the perfect fit, here are some key suggestions to keep in mind when making a purchase..
Figure out the type of head you want
This sounds like a simple statement - but it really isn't. Are you looking for the widest shower head out there, something that will blow your socks off, something with multiple functions? Is having a handshower for showing babies or animals important? Once you narrow this down - your selections can be cut in half and making the decision can become a lot easier
"Square Footage" of a shower head
Now... I am not talking square footage of your shower.. I am talking the width of your shower head. With rain heads being all the rage now, I think people get confused about the pressure that is coming from these heads. A small head isn't neccessairly any better or worse than a larger head.. we will get into that later. I find the sweet spot to be 6-10" wide - its not so small that water is only hitting one spot, but not so big that you feel like you are drowning. Ideally, you want shoulder to shoulder to be covered
Water pressure (GPM)
Almost all shower kits you buy that come with a shower head, will have a 1.75 GPM shower head - gallons per minute. This is due to the water restrictions that have been impletemted across the USA. Most of the heads have water restrictors in them that you can remove (you didnt hear that from me) OR you can get a head that is 2.5 GPM. I have this one from Amazon and it is the perfect width and pressure
Water calcium build up / rubber nipples
I know this sounds weird, but shower heads do have "nipples" one could call them. You want these! Heads that don't have these make it very hard to clean out hard water desposits overtime. This can lead to the sprayer head being clogged and sometimes past the point of repair. You should be easily able to spot these in photos - they are typically black - and in personal, you can feel them. They are slightly raised off the shower head
Water filters
Whole house filters are a thing, but they aren't cheap and don't work for people like me who live in a rental house. There are shower heads by brands like VitaClean and NearMoon that have water filters in their heads. This isn't a necessary thing, but a nice added bonus to think about.
Hopefully this post gave you some guidance on buying your next shower head. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below or email me at housealauren@gmail.com
